RACHMANINOFF ALL-NIGHT VIGIL
Sun, Sep 26, 2010 at 7pm
Gala Benefactor: The Bank of New York Mellon
PROGRAM
Sergei Rachmaninoff | All-Night Vigil, Op. 37
Champagne for everyone! The launch of Music Director Grant Gershon’s 10th season is reason to celebrate! For this special occasion, Grant and the singers revisit a crowning achievement of Russian choral music, Rachmaninoff’s All-Night Vigil -– a high point of Grant’s tenure when performed November 2006 to a sold-out Disney Hall. This magnificent work will once again bathe Disney Hall in pure a cappella radiance.
“The All-Night Vigil is like a symphony for a cappella voices. Rachmaninoff uses the singers like cellos, flutes, French horns and bells to create a tapestry of pure vocal harmony.” Grant Gershon
FRENCH CONNECTIONS

PROGRAM
Josquin des Prez | Missa Beata Virgine
Clément Janequin | Selected 16th Century French Chansons
Maurice Duruflé | Four Motets on Gregorian Themes
Maurice Ravel | Trois Chansons
Did you know Grant spent years in France working with leading musicians at the most famous concert halls? We are the beneficiaries of this musical immersion as he shares sacred and secular French masterpieces from the Renaissance to the 20th Century. The Josquin Mass is transcendent; the 16th century chansons from the prolific and popular Janequin are intricate, fast and light. The Duruflé motets including the beloved Ubi Caritas and Ravel’s impressionistic Trois Chansons will delight. C’est magnifique!
“The music of France is all about grace, wit and effortless profundity. From the Renaissance austerity of Josquín, through the dazzling virtuosity of Janequin’s madrigalesque chansons to the shifting color palettes of Ravel and Duruflé, this concert promises be extraordinaire et magnifique!” Grant Gershon
REJOICE! MESSIAH
Sun, Dec 12, 2010, 7pm
Classic Series
PROGRAM
George Frideric Handel | Messiah
arr. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Grant chose Mozart’s magical re-orchestration of Handel’s beloved Messiah for our classic holiday offering this season. Mozart added instruments normally used in a late 18th century symphony -- French horns, flutes, clarinets -- and expanded the strings, giving them a greater role and the popular oratorio a fuller sound. This symphonic and sensuous arrangement demands the entire Chorale in this full-length Messiah -- a feast for the musical palate.
“It’s like Messiah meets The Magic Flute! Imagine Handel’s towering masterpiece with Mozart’s inventive orchestral flourishes and the incomparable sound of the Master Chorale in Disney Hall!” Grant Gershon

PROGRAM
William Byrd | Four-Part Mass
Benjamin Britten | Missa Brevis in D
with Organ
Ralph Vaughan Williams | Five English Folk Songs
John Tavener | Song for Athene
Benjamin Britten | Hymn to St. Cecilia
We span the English choral tradition with roots dating to 15th century England. The love of harmony has been a hallmark of English composers for 700 years, yet we rarely focus on this important heritage. The stunning Four-Part Mass by William Byrd, one of the greatest English composers of his time, is the concert centerpiece. John Tavener’s Song for Athene, (heard during Princess Diana’s funeral), Britten’s Hymn to St. Cecilia, the patron saint of music, Missa Brevis and more round out this important survey. Choral aficionados, this one’s for you. Cheerio!
“Mellifluous, harmonious and sonorous, the beauty of the great English choral tradition has endured for hundreds of years, and England’s greatest composers have always loved the human voice above all other instruments.” Grant Gershon
STORIES FROM KOREA
Sun, Mar 6, 2011 at 7pm
with Jennifer Koh, violin
Discovery Series
PROGRAM
Mark Grey | Mugunghwa: Rose of Sharon (world premiere)
with Jennifer Koh, violin
and traditional and arranged Korean songs
Gifted composer Mark Grey (one of LA Times’ 2008 “Faces to Watch”) celebrates the Korean heritage in a story of courage and passion, based on writings by Im Hoon Jae. Mugunghwa: Rose of Sharon relates one man's spiritual path to reunification with his family, homeland, and deceased father. The chorus paints a landscape of soaring and vibrant passages, and Korean-American Jennifer Koh’s solo violin adds deeply sonorous and dense textures to weave a touching story of loss and hope. The work blends hints of the country's cherished musical and cultural traditions with western art music to create a vibrant and distinctive sonic world.
“Mark Grey is one of the most vital composers on the scene today and Jennifer Koh is one of the most probing violinists of our time. Together with the Chorale they will weave stories of the Korean experience into music of mystery and powerful emotion.” Grant Gershon

Classic Series
PROGRAM
Josef Haydn | The Creation
Gillian Keith, soprano
Thomas Randle, tenor
Sanford Sylvan, baritone
Haydn’s masterpiece. A top ten choral classic. Brilliant from start to finish. “The Creation ... is one of the towering works of all time. Though I pity music lovers who do not know the piece, part of me envies them the experience they have in store. Imagine an oratorio with the awesome intricacy of Bach’s Mass in B minor yet the sublime contentment of Mozart’s Magic Flute, and you will have some idea of The Creation.“ Anthony Tommasini, NY Times
“One of the greatest and most imaginative choral works of all time, Haydn’s masterpiece paints the opening passages of the Book of Genesis with music of incomparable wonder and joy.” Grant Gershon
