Amy Fogerson
Voice Part: Alto
Season you joined the Chorale: 1987-88 (yikes!)
Birthplace: San Mateo, CA
Education/Vocal Training: BA in Choral Conducting from Occidental College
Do you make your living as a musician? Yes
Where else do you gig/teach/conduct/sing/perform? One of the Performer Teaching Artists for the LAMC educational residency Voices Within; member of the Los Angeles Master Chorale Chamber Singers; lots of studio/session work and “ringer” work
Where else do you sing NOW?: High holidays at Temple Israel of Hollywood; Los Angeles Chamber Singers and Cappella; Paulist Choristers; Jacaranda Chamber Singers
Recent solo roles or guest appearances: Andriessen’s De Stijl with the LA Philharmonic (Green Umbrella); Ligeti’s Clocks and Clouds with Esa-Pekka Salonen and the LA Philharmonic; Dvorak’s Mass in D with the Paulist Choristers; many “drive-by” (short) solos with the LA Master Chorale
Recordings/TV/Film: Steve Reich’s You Are (Variations) with the LAMC on Nonesuch (as well as other LAMC recordings); Sixth Wave and It Will Come to You with the jazz sextet Sixth Wave on Singularity Records; more than 40 movie soundtracks, including recent releases Marley and Me, The Day the Earth Stood Still, Tale of Despereaux, Watchmen, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Ice Age 3
Highlights of your musical career: Singing Reich’s Tehillim under Grant’s baton at Lincoln Center in NYC as part of the “Steve Reich at 70” festival; Esa-Pekka Salonen’s final concerts at Disney Hall (Stravinsky Symphony of Psalms); Adams’ El Niño with Salonen, the LA Phil, staged by Peter Sellars, performed at the Dorothy Chandler and Brooklyn Academy of Music; our first concert with Grant at Walt Disney Concert Hall; Berlioz’ Damnation of Faust with the LA Phil under Simon Rattle
Favorite choral work: It is so hard to choose just one, and whatever I’m currently working on is usually on the list…but Britten’s War Requiem has been consistently in my top 5 for the last 25 years, so I’m guessing it’s a good candidate!
A defining moment or favorite onstage experience: Being one of the soloists in the first performance of Handel’s Messiah in Walt Disney Concert Hall—it was a sing-along, and being onstage surrounded by an entire audience singing the choruses was truly thrilling!
What are you listening to these days?: k.d. lang, Matt Alber, Adams’ Flowering Tree, the LAMC CD Live at Walt Disney Concert Hall (you can only get it when you make a donation to the LAMC…it’s SO worth it!); Lorraine Hunt Lieberson; Alison Krauss and Union Station; Gabriel Mann; bluegrass, classic rock, r&b, jazz, instrumental, choral…whatever speaks to me at the moment.
Anything you’d like to add about yourself?: Every day I wake up and pinch myself because I still can’t believe I get to make my living making music with all these amazing people!
