Holiday Wonders: Festival of Carols
Saturday, December 3 and 10, 2011, 2 pm

The Los Angeles Master Chorale’s seasonal favorite, Holiday Wonders: Festival of Carols, which has sold out for the past two years, expands to two Saturday matinees December 3 and 10, 2011, 2 pm, at Walt Disney Concert Hall. Cherished holiday carols such as Joy to the World, The First Noel, Hark the Herald Angels Sing and others, sung to perfection by 62 members of the Chorale under Music Director Grant Gershon’s baton, set a joyful mood, enhanced by John Rutter’s thrilling three-movement Gloria. Dazzling brass and Disney Hall’s iconic pipe organ add sonic flourish to make this concert a highlight of the season. Tickets for children 6-12 are discounted in all sections. (Children under six not admitted.) Holiday Wonders: Festival of Carols is made possible, in part, with support from The Bank of America Charitable Foundation and the Pasadena Showcase House for the Arts.

Rejoice! A Classic Christmas

Four Christmas classics herald the holidays at Rejoice! A Classic Christmas, the second of four Los Angeles Master Chorale seasonal programs, Sunday, December 11, 2011, 7 p.m. Music Director Grant Gershon conducts Hugo Distler’s otherworldly Christmas Story, a four-part a cappella treasure for chorus and soloists inspired by the carol Lo, How a Rose E’er Blooming, evoking snowy landscapes and the quiet calm of a traditional Bavarian Christmas; and Four Christmas Motets by Poulenc, composed in 1951 for four-part mixed chorus that were, with their joyful serenity, among the composer’s favorite choral pieces. Two contemporary classics complete the program – Frank Ferko’s colorful 2002 composition, A Festival of Carols, based on five American Christmas texts from the 18th and 19th centuries, and Morten Lauridsen’s signature work, the extraordinary O Magnum Mysterium, commissioned for the Chorale by Founding LAMC Board Member Marshall Rutter in honor of his wife, Terry Knowles.

31st Annual Messiah Sing-Along

Hallelujah! For those who enjoy the thrill of singing the ethereal high notes and booming bass notes of Handel’s wildly popular Messiah themselves, the Los Angeles Master Chorale presents its 31st Annual Messiah Sing-Along, in which the 2,100-member audience becomes the choir, with a quartet of professional soloists from the Chorale, Monday, December 12, 2011, 7:30 p.m. (Scores are available for $10 at the door.) Featured soloists are Chorale members Ayana Haviv, soprano, Tracy Van Fleet, mezzo-soprano, Jon Lee Keenan, tenor, and Steve Pence, bass. Music Director Grant Gershon conducts live orchestra, soloists and, of course, the audience as the choir, in this special tradition, proclaimed “a holiday bestseller” by LA Weekly.

“The Messiah Sing-Along is one of the highlights of the holiday,” says Gershon, “You can't help but feel the spirit of the season when you're literally surrounded by 2,100 people joined together in song.”

Handel: Messiah (concert version performed by Los Angeles Master Chorale)

The Los Angeles Master Chorale presents a “traditional” concert version of Handel’s Messiah on Sunday, December 18, 2011, 7 p.m., at Walt Disney Concert Hall. Conducted by Music Director Grant Gershon and featuring 48 members of the acclaimed Los Angeles Master Chorale as well as four gifted soloists from among the choir’s ranks, this concert provides a special opportunity to hear the oratorio performed by what many consider to be the best chorus in the country. Soloists for the performance are Sunjoo Yeo, soprano, Janelle DeStefano, mezzo-soprano, Daniel Chaney, tenor, and Abdiel Gonzalez, bass. Composed in 1741 in a mere 24 days, Handel’s English-language oratorio may well be the most performed classical work of all time. It is set to the libretto by Charles Jennens, who drew texts from the King James and Great Bibles.
