Audition process

Singers will be asked to prepare two contrasting selections that best demonstrate the quality and versatility of their voice. A pianist will be provided for all auditions. The segment of the audition evaluating musicianship will strongly emphasize sight-singing. Testing will progress from easy to difficult, including scales, intervals, and rhythms. Please be aware that you may be asked to sing a chromatic scale as a test of intonation. There will also be a test of tonal memory – i.e. the ability to sing back a phrase that was just played on the piano. Finally, there may be a short language test during which singers may be asked to sight read a phrase or two in Latin, French and German in order to evaluate the individual's basic level of familiarity with the rules of diction in those languages. The length of each audition will be approximately 15 minutes.
